Education is a pathway. Knowledge is Country.

Yapug — meaning 'Pathway' — is a sand-engraved artwork that celebrates the power of education to open doors for Indigenous students. At the heart of the design sits a gathering circle bordered by Elder and people symbols, representing learning, mentorship, and the entry into further education. Twenty people symbols flow upward into this central image, honouring 20 years of the Yapug program at the University of Newcastle.

The flowing pathways in the backdrop depict individual educational journeys, while acknowledging the Country and tribal groups of the many diverse participants the program has served across the nation. A story of opportunity, perseverance, and the invaluable role of Elders in guiding the next generation forward.
