Booragul Public School - Booragul, Warm Place
This artwork reflects Booragul Public School and their footprint on country on the shores of Awaba (Lake Macquarie) on the land of Awabakal.
Central to the design a large gathering circle inclusive of the school mascot, The Blue Tongue Lizard (Naruta in Awabakal) is reflective of the school and together with surrounding people symbols, highlights the school community and strong caring relationships that place value on students and families. Interwoven throughout the three central gathering circles in the artwork, people symbols flow across the canvas, symbolising the journey of education from past, present and into the future.
To the top left a traditional symbol for the sun depicts Booragul as the summertime or warm place, while a further gathering circle to the right of the canvas represents school families and the journey of students as they move forward on their education journey’s. Directly above this imagery symbolism for Elders passing on knowledge is depicted, highlighting the importance of education and the traditional place of Elders, as respected knowledge keepers
Songlines on country depict the Awabakal as the people of the hills and plains and beautiful Lake Macquarie is represented through traditional water symbolism and midden that flow across the bottom of the artwork.
Together the artwork acknowledges the Awabakal people as traditional custodians, celebrates the journey of education and highlights connection to community and place.
