Pantimay – Message series 9
The vibrant colour of this painting represents country or totems of Aboriginal people. The repeating circles depict different clan groups or traditional owners and their link to neighbouring groups. The vertical lines are message sticks. These carved or painted wooden poles were used to advise travellers and visitors to their country with information on campsites, water locations and totem. Each tribe has an animal totem which meant that animal was not eaten by that tribe and is protected within the country of which it is totem. This ensured that species were not at risk.
