The Story Begins: Meet Saretta Fielding

The Story Begins: Meet Saretta Fielding

Every artwork tells a story, and for Aboriginal artist Saretta Fielding, that story begins with deep cultural roots, family, and Country. As a proud Wonnarua woman from the Hunter Valley NSW, Saretta’s creative journey is grounded in her connection to culture and her passion for sharing it with others.

Through her business, Saretta Art & Design, she has built a bridge between tradition and contemporary living—bringing Aboriginal culture into homes, workplaces, and communities across Australia and beyond.

From Country to Canvas

Saretta’s inspiration comes directly from Country. The patterns, lines, and textures in her work are drawn from the ancient sandstone engravings and sand drawings of her people.

Each piece is more than an artwork—it’s a cultural narrative, a visual language that tells of belonging, kinship, and the natural world.

What makes Saretta’s style unique is her use of highly textured, sand-based mediums. These tactile surfaces invite you not just to look at the artwork, but to experience it in a deeper way—through touch, memory, and story.

“I’ve always seen myself as working in a big sandpit. That’s where my creativity flows best.” – Saretta Fielding

The Leap into Art & Design

Although Saretta had long created and exhibited artworks, it wasn’t until 2014 that she took the leap into a full-time art practice with business partner John Hancock.

What began as a small studio quickly grew into something more: a thriving art and design business that would later evolve into a social enterprise.

Today, Saretta Art & Design offers much more than original artworks. Saretta has expanded her practice into:

From a hand-painted canvas to a scarf or cushion cover, each design carries the same cultural depth and meaning.

Art with Purpose

In 2016, Saretta’s journey expanded further with the creation of the Malang Indigenous Corporation, a not-for-profit organisation focused on:

  • Social investment

  • Cultural advancement

  • Community empowerment

For Saretta, art is more than self-expression—it’s a platform for connection, reconciliation, and opportunity.

Through Malang, she has been able to create employment pathways for community, collaborate with businesses and organisations, and uplift our local Aboriginal voices and culture on a national scale.

Looking Ahead

Today, Saretta’s artworks can be found in homes, offices, and public spaces across Australia. Her designs have been commissioned by major organisations, featured in exhibitions, and transformed into fashion and lifestyle collections.

Yet at the heart of it all remains her core mission: to share culture through art and create meaningful connections with people everywhere.
