Kurra Kurrin - Petrified Forest (Blackalls Park)
The artwork is reflective of the Kurra Kurrin Petrified Forest, which is located within walking distance of my home in Fennell Bay, Blackalls Park, New South Wales. The site holds high cultural significance and value to the Awabakal people with many indications of traditional life carried out in the area. The site is geologically significant due to the fossilization of an ancient pine forest from the fallout of volcanic ash many years ago. Heavily textured horizontal lines running across this artwork have a threefold meaning: earthy tone related to Awabakal country upon which the forest stands, the blues are symbolic of Ninkinba (Lake Macquarie) and nearby Stony Creek, while the muted greens link to the petrified trees. This is set upon a deeper engraved design depicting the past traditional community life within the now silent forest.
Size: 910 x 910 mm
Medium: Mixed medium on premium stretched canvas with hanging hooks and wire.
