The Long Journey Home shares Lachie’s story as he travels from the west coast to the east coast of Australia, opening caring conversations about men’s mental health and suicide prevention, and reminding people they are valued and supported. His physical challenge carries a heartfelt purpose: to raise funds and help others, while connecting the places that have shaped him, the family he is building and the people he meets along the way.

Four gathering circles connect across the artwork, depicting the towns and communities along his journey. People symbols interwoven within the design highlight those who walk alongside him, welcome him and share their stories. These connections reflect the strength of community and the value of making time to listen, yarn and care for one another.

At the top left an Elders symbol acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the many tribal countries along the way and honouring their enduring connection to Country. A person symbol carrying a spear to represents men, reflects Lachie beginning his journey in the west, while the same figure appears on the right, marking his arrival home on the east coast and connecting the beginning and completion of his journey. Across the bottom of the artwork imagery depicts engraved message stick, highlighting Lachies message, conversation and peoples’ stories along the way.

The backdrop shares songlines on Country, with layers of colour depicting waterways, warm deserts, valleys, hills and plains. These flowing forms reflect the beauty and diversity of Country stretching across Australia and bring a sense of movement to the long journey home.

At its heart, the artwork reflects strength, integrity, drive and giving more to community than we take. It shares a journey grounded in purpose, where each connection creates space for conversation, belonging and hope.
