Nikinpa - Place of Coal
This serene artwork depicts the shoreline of Lake Macquarie NSW, my home.
The painting captures this beautiful land and waterscape before colonisation, highlighting nature’s splendour.
Nikinpa meaning place of coal, refers to early settler’s discovery that the whole lake - twenty one miles long by eight miles wide - abounded with coal.
As a place name, ‘Nikinpa’ was the traditional name for the foreshore and littoral surroundings of Lake Macquarie.
